What is a Glass?

Glass is an inorganic, amorphous material primarily made of silicon dioxide (SiO₂). Although it appears solid, its internal structure is more like a supercooled liquid without a regular crystalline pattern. Natural glass, such as obsidian, exists, but most glass used in everyday life is man-made. Glass is produced by melting raw materials like silica sand, soda ash, and limestone at high temperatures and then cooling it rapidly to prevent crystallization. This results in a transparent, hard, chemically stable material with low electrical and thermal conductivity.

Glass is widely used in various industries due to its transparency and durability. Common applications include windows, tableware, optical fibers, smartphone screens, laboratory equipment, and architectural structures. Specialized types of glass include tempered glass, bulletproof glass, heat-resistant glass, and optical glass.
