What is a Sodium Chromate?
Sodium chromate (Na₂CrO₄) is an inorganic compound that appears as a bright yellow crystalline powder. It contains hexavalent chromium (Cr⁶⁺), making it a powerful oxidizing agent with known toxicity and carcinogenicity, necessitating strict handling precautions. It is commonly used in laboratories for analytical chemistry, as a catalyst in oxidation reactions, and in the manufacturing of dyes and pigments. Sodium chromate is also utilized in metal surface treatments, such as chromate conversion coatings for corrosion resistance. It finds additional use in leather tanning and as an intermediate in chemical synthesis.
Due to its environmental and health hazards, its use and disposal are heavily regulated in many countries, requiring safe handling procedures.
