What is a Phenothiazine?
Phenothiazine is a tricyclic compound with the chemical formula C₁₂H₉NS, consisting of a thiazine ring flanked by two benzene rings. Initially developed as an intermediate for dyes, phenothiazine later gained importance in pharmacology. Phenothiazine derivatives laid the foundation for the development of typical antipsychotic drugs, such as chlorpromazine, which function by blocking dopamine receptors and are primarily used to treat positive symptoms of schizophrenia (e.g., hallucinations, delusions). These compounds also have antihistamine and antiemetic properties.
Some phenothiazine derivatives have been used in veterinary medicine as anthelmintics or insecticides, although such uses have declined in recent years.
