What is a Ruthenium chloride (commonly ruthenium(III) chloride RuCl₃)?
Ruthenium chloride (commonly ruthenium(III) chloride, RuCl₃) is a compound of the noble metal ruthenium. It typically appears as a red-purple or dark violet crystalline solid. It dissolves in water to form a red-purple solution and is relatively stable in air but can decompose under light or heat. Ruthenium chloride is widely used as a chemical catalyst, especially in organic synthesis and homogeneous catalysis. It plays a key role in oxidation reactions, hydrogenation, and cross-coupling reactions. It is also applied in the development of nanomaterials and electronic devices. RuCl₃ is often used as a precursor to other ruthenium complexes. While moderately toxic, it should be handled with care using protective equipment in a well-ventilated area.
