What is a RFID System?
RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) is a technology that uses radio waves to identify and track objects without the need for physical contact. Similar to barcodes, RFID enables the automatic identification of tagged items; however, it does not require a direct line of sight and can read multiple tags simultaneously. A typical RFID system consists of four main components: RFID tags (embedded with IC chips), RFID readers, antennas, and a data management system (software). Each RFID tag contains data related to the object it is attached to—such as a product, person, or vehicle. When the tag receives a signal from the reader, it transmits the stored information back to the system.
There are two primary types of RFID tags: active and passive. Active tags have a built-in battery, enabling long-range communication, but they are generally more expensive. Passive tags, on the other hand, do not require an internal power source, making them more cost-effective and widely used in applications such as logistics, retail, and inventory management. Implementing an RFID system can significantly improve operational efficiency in areas such as inventory tracking, access control, logistics monitoring, and production process visibility. The ability to capture real-time data supports faster decision-making and enhances traceability across the supply chain.
RFID is considered a core IoT (Internet of Things) technology and is expected to play an increasingly vital role across various industries in the future.
Application of RFID System
✅ Warehouse and Inventory Management
RFID tags attached to products allow for batch scanning during goods movement, enabling real-time inventory visibility and reducing manual errors.
✅ Automated Checkout in Retail Stores
With RFID-tagged products, cashiers can scan multiple items simultaneously without needing to find barcodes, significantly speeding up the checkout process.
✅ Manufacturing Process Tracking
By tagging parts or products, factories can monitor the status of items throughout production, improving quality control and delivery efficiency.
✅ Library Book Management
RFID allows simultaneous check-in and check-out of multiple books, reducing time at the counter and enhancing anti-theft security.
